- Parents report logins that suddenly fail with the same credentials, buses shown as "not active", and the app being down for days at a time.
- Last update: March 2025, while the complaints keep coming this fall.
What 10 school apps taught us about shipping mobile updates without breaking them.
Every August, parents, students and school staff across the US open the same school apps again, and a familiar review shows up on Google Play: "It worked fine last school year." We read the recent reviews of 10 apps that K-12 schools rely on. This is where they stand today.

App health combines the Google Play rating and the average of the last 12 months of reviews. A snapshot, not a verdict. The arrow next to the last 12 months shows whether the last 12 months of reviews are pulling it up or down. Read on October 26, 2026. These apps ship on iOS too, and the tips below apply to both.
Most of the pain did not come from missing features. It came from updates. A new version ships, something that used to work stops working, and the people who depend on it find out at the worst possible moment.
This is not a ranking of good and bad teams. Some of the best apps on this list had a rough update this season too. It is a look at a problem every mobile team faces, and nine ways to keep it from happening to yours.
Before you ship.
Most teams test a clean install. Real users upgrade. Install the previous version, use it for a while, then update on top. Local databases, saved settings and stored credentials are where updates quietly break, and "clear your cache" in a review is the giveaway.
In .NET MAUI and Xamarin, trimming and AOT compilation change what ends up in the package. Code that works in Debug can be missing in Release. Run your critical flows, login first, on the exact build you are about to ship.
Raising the target Android version turns on new behavior, like drawing the app edge to edge under the system bars. That is how buttons end up hidden under the clock. Every September a new iOS does the same with new screens and stricter rules. Keep the newest Pixel, Galaxy and iPhone in your test matrix.
The three tests above are the first to go when a release runs late. An AI agent can run them for you: walk the critical flows on the newest Android and iOS, read the device logs, and review every pull request for data changes that have no migration. Then keep the scripts it writes in CI, so every release gets the same checks.
When you ship.
Google Play lets you release to 5 percent of users, then 20, then everyone, and halt if something goes wrong. The App Store offers a phased release over seven days that you can pause. A bad update that reaches 5 percent is a bug report. One that reaches 100 percent is a support crisis.
School apps have a peak week, and it is the first week of school. Ship the big changes in early summer, freeze in the weeks before classes start, and keep only fixes for the rush.
If an update is required, let the critical features keep working while it downloads. Nobody should be staring at an update screen during a drill or at pickup time.
All year round.
Crash reporting tells you about a bad release in minutes, reviews tell you in days. Many Xamarin apps relied on Visual Studio App Center, which was retired in March 2025. If yours did, make sure something like Sentry or Firebase Crashlytics replaced it.
Xamarin support ended in May 2024. Google Play keeps raising the Android version apps must target, and Apple requires apps to be built with a recent Xcode, so a Xamarin app eventually cannot ship an update on either store. An app that cannot be updated cannot be fixed. Moving to .NET MAUI keeps most of your code and puts you back on a supported path.
Every app on this list was built by people who care about schools. The difference between a good season and a bad one is rarely talent. It is how much of the release process stands between a change and a parent's phone.
So here is the question worth asking before the next back to school: if your next update broke login, how long would it take you to find out?
Data from public Google Play listings and reviews, read on 2026-10-26. App health is a snapshot of public signals, not an assessment of the teams behind these apps. Horus is not affiliated with any of the companies listed.
Every score on this page is a short summary of a close analysis of public reviews and store data. The full check goes deeper: the issues that repeat, when they started and what is most likely behind them, in a short report for your team. No cost, no commitment.
